About bugs - Download bugs (5660 bytes)When you make a lot of levels you sometime forgets the fact that each level have to have Kye and at least a diamond in them. This can have some rather surprising effect since Kye and the diamond will be put in the game by it self at a place you cant decide. The author usually decides to place the diamond in the upper left corner and Kye at a position 3 from the top and 3 from the left:
But when you place other objects in these positions the author choice of placing Kye and the diamond can have rather surprising sideeffect. Some of the same unpredictable behavior happens when Kye dies in a game and the position he started in has become occupied by an moving object since the beginning of the game. Kye then reapears nonintended places. My husband and I consided the above rather as some silly bugs thought other level-writers have used them. To teese Colin we made the set of levels called bugs to illustrate the above described silly bugs and along with them som other peculiarities we observed. 11 of the levels are old and 3 levels are some I added in 2001. Here is a detailed description of the levels in "BUGS":
Kye has to die 3 times to solve the game. Three times he has to be teleported through walls. To be teleported to the right place he has to go into the hole at a time where the only availabel free space is where he wants to be teleported to. The level also uses the fact/bug that when Kye walks from a door to a hole the door is teleported with him. The fact is used to make sure that Kye is not teleported back to places he has been in.
Here the fact that a
And in fact if you minimize the Kye-window and maximize it again it will bee repainted and stop looking silly.
In the old version of BUGS this level was called Timers, because I wrongly thought they were the ones beeing unpredictable, but it is the bouncers. Bounchers seemingly have two initial states so one cannot predict wich way the bouncer will be turned at the beginning of the game -- that is if they cannot move. For instance if they are stopped by timers or stickers. In this level it is rather random if the game can be solved or not. If you dont believe me try the level a handfull of times.
Some times bouncers can be put in a position where they look like they behave wrong. In this level they don't really behave wrong it just looks like it because each time the horisontal bouncers are pushed away the don't get time to be painted on the board before they are pushed up again. The result is two bouncers looking stuck in midair!
The Mouse can make Kye move faster than any other object in the game. But in moving through a door where Kye ought to attract a sticker the stickers some times don't notice Kye and therefore isn't attracted to Kye. Exactly when this happens I cannot quite figure out, but in this level it does happen.
Because weve "forgotten" to place Kye in the level he is being "born" on top of the clocker so you cannot see the clocker. But it gets even worse. When Kye moves one still cannot see the clocker. But that doesnt mean it isnt there cause a sticker can make it reapear -- if you dont know why this really makes you belive i magic!
Like in the previous weve "forgotten" to place Kye in the level, but this time he is "born" over a blob. Because the blob is being constantly repaintet it looks like Kye has disapeared, and as long as Kye is under the blob he cant move without dying. ![]() Like in the two previous levels I've forgotten to place Kye in the level, but this time he is "born" over a timer. This somehow makes Kye disapear shortly after the game is startet and then turn into a non-being until he makes a move. Thing can go through Kye without notice. Actually the only trace of him is that the animal can sent his ghost!
Like in the three previous weve forgotten to place Kye in the level, but this time he is "born" over a hole. This someway makes the hole behave as if it wasnt there though it is visible all the time. Indeed it is even more visible than everything you try to place in it, that being Kye, blobs, stickers, sliders or rockies.
This time we have forgotten to place a diamond and this is being born under a hole. Like in the previous this makes the hole visible but also makes it behave like it wast there. But the diamond beneath it is there, so to get the diamond you must go into the hole!
In this level we have again forgotten to place a diamond and this is being born under a sticker. This time it is the diamond that is visible, but the sticker still works, cause if you take the easy way to the diamond, the diamond will litterally vanish and the sticker will get visible. On the other hand the hard way will not make the diamond vanish since the sticker only stick in the up-down direction.
In this level we have both forgotten to place a diamond and Kye. The effect is that the diamond (as in the previous level) hides a sticker and that Kye hides a rocky.
When Kye runs fast enough into a monster it is sometimes possible to move the monster just before he dies. Perhaps this is the same "bug" as in MOUSERUN. Actually the level name is shown ad "ON3" instead of as "PUSH". This is appearently because the interpretation of the Kye-file somehow overwrites the levelname when the message is more than 80 charecters long. LAST (In poetry were bad, but it would make us sad, if these bugs would be in Kye versiON3) We have forgotten to place Kye so he is born on top of the diamond, witch makes the diamond vanish totally and the level impossible to solve. |
